Words of Mouth: What Are You Affirming?

By Richard Kent Matthews - Coach | Author | Speaker

Gold is more than just shiny metal, you know!

Are the usual 'prosperity affirmations' just so much fluff?

Books by the hundreds, maybe thousands, tell you how to get what you want, manifest this and that, create overflowing abundance, grab the gold, strike it rich, healing your body, mind, and spirit. Some are pretty good, too.

I've read nearly all of them over the past 35 years or so. Have they helped? You damn right they have. But not in the way you might expect.

After all the reading, researching, practicing, meditating, levitating, migrating, and aggravating, I came to the realization that I was making it way too difficult. So, I dumbed it all down for myself and that's when some good change, some not-so-scary or overwhelming change began to slowly ooze into my experience. I share with you here how I made it all happen.

Healthy TIPS for Manifestation

‘Everything we do is driven by the desire to feel a certain way.’ Danielle Laporte, The Desire Map

So, first thing, how do you want to feel?

‘Affirmations are like screaming that you’re okay in order to overcome this whisper that you’re not. That’s a big contrast to actually uncovering the whisper, realizing that it’s a passing memory, and moving closer to all those fears and all those edgy feelings that maybe you’re not okay. Well, no big deal. None of us is okay and all of us are fine. It’s not just one way. We are walking, talking paradoxes.’ Pema Chödron, Start Where You Are

Second thing, accept you may not yet really know how you want to feel exactly, and honor how you're actually feeling, right now, in this moment. Then...

Truth
Tell yourself the truth of your feelings, including fear, anger, and doubt. Look in the mirror and don’t lie. No Fluffermations.* ‘If you’re going to affirm something, affirm the truth. Then go do something about it.’ Jim Rohn

Intention
Create an intention to be, do, or have a different outcome. Don’t force it. But make sure it’s what you want. ‘Desire is a teacher: When we immerse ourselves in it without guilt, shame, or clinging, it can show us something special about our own minds that allows us to embrace life fully.’ Mark Epstein, Open to Desire

Practice
Take a step in the direction of your intention. Nothing happens 'til something moves.  Small steps toward continuous improvement. ‘What you seek is seeking you.’ Rumi

Serenity
Create a space for gratitude, even if you don’t feel it right now. It is gratitude that ultimately leads to a sense of inner peace, of serenity. ‘The point of life is happiness.’ The Dalai Lama

The Greatest Block
Self pity. Honor it, but stop it.

As it turns out, there can be many apparent roadblocks to the manifestation of our desires, our wishes, our hopes. They may appear insurmountable. But the greater roadblocks are our own sense of unworthiness, despair, and of feeling sorry for ourselves.  In that way, we disrespect all that we are, all that we do, all that we hope to accomplish. So, final step:

Make the decision to earn your own self respect. You do that by getting off the couch, the sofa, the Chesterfield and creating new projects, new directions, new goals.  The effort itself raises your levels of self respect by many meters.

And the most powerful step of all, appreciate your life and everything in it, as it is right now. That is the true secret to the manifestation process, no matter what else the books and the gurus tell you.

It's up to you. As usual.

*Fluffermations are ‘affirmations’ you make up and repeat in an attempt to change a belief. They rarely work.
