You're Free to Suffer...Or Not

By Richard Kent Matthews - Coach | Author | Speaker

Clouds bring life, no matter the shades of gray...

"Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky." Rabindranath Tagore

It's easy to play the victim. And sometimes the justification seems almost essential. When you are injured, or lose a child, or go through Hurricane Maria or Harvey or Katrina. When you go broke, or crash your car, or end up on the streets. Victim, victim, victim. To say otherwise is cruelty run amok.

Here's the harsh truth: No matter the pain, the suffering is always up to you.

We all go through the pains shared by all living creatures on this unpredictable planet. Whether we live in Indiana or India, Chicago or China, Moscow, Russia or Moscow, Idaho, none of us escapes pain.

Often, the pain seems unbearable. Many can't handle it. Suicide rates are high among those who cannot cope.

But you're not among those numbers. You can and will bounce back. No matter the appearances, no matter the odds.

Yes, get help, connect with sympathetic and empathetic friends, family, and professionals. They can be rocks when you need stability. Rafts when you feel lost and adrift. Comforters when all you want to do is cry.

Go through it. Just don't lay down roots in the pain. Make it temporary.

It can be tough, I know. Been there, done that. But after more than 70 years on this earth, I still see the beauty, the grandeur, the Mystery of it all.

Have I suffered? Oh, you bet. But I have refused to settle for suffering, to wallow in it. To feel sorry for myself. At least, not for long.

I know you may be going through trauma. You may be experiencing pain beyond anything I can understand. I get that. Still, I offer you this:

You always have the choice to suffer or not. No one can take that  choice from you. Not pain, not pressure, not people.

You're stronger than you may think at this moment. You have a reserve of energy that can kick in whenever you're ready and willing to let it.

But take your time. As long as you know there is light in the dark, you can move toward it at your own pace.

You are loved. Always.
