Can you 'find' God? Let's see...
My friend Joe was over for a coffee recently. We got into a discussion about God. He says he really has trouble with the concept of a deity sitting somewhere outside the universe, with feelings and emotions, watching humans as they bumble their way through life, getting annoyed when they slip up, or overjoyed when they praise him.
Yeah, me too.
If i've learned anything over the past seven decades, it's this:
Whatever anyone thinks about God, no matter the religion, the philosophy or the fundamentalism, only one truth remains. No one's got it right. Oh, they'll contradict me on that one. But it doesn't change the fact.
If there is a Source to all this, the universe, life, me, you, it remains the Eternal Mystery. And even that might be too much description.
Personally, I like the idea of Mystery, but a living Mystery. Why? Because I'm living. I've been given this amazing opportunity to experience the grandeur of this planet, the angst and disappointment of relationships along with the love and joy. I love the night sky, the ocean, the forests, even the deserts. Life everywhere. And I know it's all just the tip of the cosmic ice berg.
Mostly, I'm grateful. It may all disappear in the end, nothing remaining. No heaven, no hell, no Bardo or Valhalla. But that's ok. Because I get to enjoy it right now, here, in this moment,
You may think the world is going to hell. Appearances suggest it. In fact, this is the best time to be alive in all human history. A flushing toilet alone is good enough reason. Right up to the time of my parents' births, people in rural communities often didn't have running water, electricity, or connection to the outside world except through newspapers and occasional telephones.
This is a great time to be alive in spite of Washington DC, Moscow, or Damascus.
Join me in gratitude. It changes your mind, your heart, your experience.
