Conscious Success in Seven Simple Steps...If You're Up for It

Follow your own road without apologies!

Success happens first in your mind, your heart, and your decisions. Only then, in your world!

Writer Christopher Morley (1890-1957) wrote that the only real success is to live your life in your own way. So, no matter what I say, or anyone says, in books, Sunday sermons, articles, or screaming parents, if you're not living according to your own rules, that is, without hurting anyone else, success may seem elusive. Others can often talk you out of what you want to do.

Don't let them do that!

Here's the secret. Follow these seven steps and you're on the road to your definition of success. The steps are not rules; just guidelines and ultimately, guide posts. Have fun.

Intention: First, know what the heck you want. This can be one of the most difficult places to be. You've so many choices. And voices in your head and ear. Listen to your gut instinct. If it's wrong, you'll know soon enough. And, if necessary, a trusted advisor who has your best interests at heart, not their own.

Invention: Make it up. All directions, all possibilities, are available to you. You're limited only by your own choices.

Direction: Scan the horizon, look at the inner maps, even ask for help. But head out. Like it or not, our earthly journey is shorter than you may think.

Connection: It may sound contradictory to what I said above, but none of us succeeds alone. When you need help, ask. And develop your powers of discernment. Important!

Expectation: Hold a good picture in your mind about the outcome you desire,  but more important, hold a picture, or pictures, of the process. See the steps you need to take. The 'Final Outcome' is blurry anyway, so focus more on the process. Even with the best of our visualizations, we are often surprised. 

Reflection: Every day, review your progress. Even if you fail occasionally, it's still progress. Failure is part of it. Work it into your equations. It's often gold. We learn more from our mistakes than our successes. 

Appreciation: From the very beginning, adopt the gratitude attitude. It's more than just a thank you; it's a necessary discipline. Each day, practice by consciously expressing gratitude for everything in your life. Start in the morning with your bed, your sheets, your clock radio or cell phone wake up. Your bathroom, your kitchen, the fact you have a roof over your head. Wherever you are, thank it for holding you up. Even if you're on the streets. Gratitude is the beginning of the way home. 

The more conscious you are, the more aware you are, the more likely you are to reach whatever goal or achievement you create. 

Simple. Not always easy. But not that difficult, either.
